Zamboanga City flower produce runs low

ZAMBOANGA City, which was known several years ago as the country's city of flowers, is running low on supply of flowers.

This was learned Saturday from Bibing Buenaventura, who had been into business of flower arrangements for several years now in this southern port city.

Buenaventura disclosed they would not have enough flowers to cater to the needs of the public for this year's All Saints and All Souls Day had it not for the flowers that arrived from other parts of the country or even as far as Japan.

She said most of the flowers they sell came from Davao, Cebu, General Santos, Iligan, Manila and Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur.

She said this year's produce of farmers in the village of La Paz, 18.5 kilometers west of this city, who are into ornamental plants growing is very low.

"Their plants did not bloom and produce good flowers," she said citing only few of the farmers managed to supply them.

She said the La Paz farmers could only supply each of them a maximum of 100 bundles of Chrysanthemum compared to more than 300 bundles in 2008.

Each bundle is a dozen of Chrysanthemum flowers, she said.
