Police to activate bike patrols

THE Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) is implementing a new patrol scheme to boost security measures.

Senior Superintendent Lurimer Detran, ZCPO director, said they are implementing the so-called bike patrol to augment existing beat and roving patrols.

Detran said policemen assigned to bike patrol would concentrate on small roads that are accessible only to two-wheel vehicles in the different parts of the city.

"We will enhance the communication system so that they (bike patrollers) can call the nearest station or roving patrol group in case they are chasing lawless elements or group and could not catch up," Detran said.

The beat patrols are composed of foot policemen detailed in major thoroughfares of the city, while the roving patrols are equipped with four-wheel vehicles.

Detran said there would be 17 pairs of policemen who will make up the bike patrol group.

The bicycle needed to be used in the bike patrol will be provided by the local government, said Detran.

Previously, the military's Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ) organized a bike patrol but it was stopped after General Jovenal Narcise, then TFZ chief, was reassigned to another assignment outside Zamboanga City. (Bong Garcia)
