DA: Gulayan sa Paaralan Project underway

THE Gulayan sa Paaralan Project (GPP) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Education (DepEd) is underway in the Zamboanga del Norte province.

DA Regional Director Oscar Parawan said that at least 100 district supervisors and school principals, as well as DA's High Value Commercial Crops (HVCC) technicians, recently attended a briefing and orientation for the implementation of the GPP in Zamboanga del Norte.

Parawan said the briefing and orientation was conducted for the purpose of informing the participants of the implementing guidelines of the GPP.

During the orientation, Parawan said the participants also set the deadline for the submission of the list of participating schools and the corresponding weekly reports, presented the mechanics in the distribution of vegetable seeds, and discussed other matters pertaining to GPP.

He said the GPP is a school-community food production project under the government's hunger mitigation and poverty alleviation scheme, with the end view of promoting food security and economic stability for the food-poor and other vulnerable and food insecure provinces nationwide.

The GPP shall be implemented in all public elementary and secondary schools, and in technical-vocational schools with ample or limited areas in rural or even urban setting using organic gardening technologies.

Production of selected varieties of vegetables shall be intensified in the schools and in the communities as food prescription to address deficiency in protein, energy, vitamin A and iron. (Bong Garcia)
