Military gears for battle v. Basilan attackers (6:10 p.m.)

MANILA -- The military is bracing for a massive operation against the armed group responsible for the killing of 14 Marine soldiers, 10 of them beheaded, and the wounding of nine others in the jungles of Basilan province.

In a press briefing at the military headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Armed Forces public information officer Bartolome Bacarro on Friday said government forces are preparing for punitive actions against the perpetrators.

Bacarro would not say which group they are targeting in the operations but said the operations are underway even as he said that troops are now being pre-positioned in the province for the operation.

Bacarro said the arrival of the 1st Marine Battalion Landing Team in Basilan from Sulu is part of the military action. The battalion, composed of around 500 men, is fighting Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Sulu. (VR/MSN/Sunnex)
