European envoy: Anti-terror law needs to safeguard human rights (6:25 p.m.)
DAVAO CITY -- European Commission's Ambassador to the Philippines Alistair Macdonald believes that there is nothing new about a country having a law that addresses the threat of terrorism, just as most countries in the world has.
Macdonald, however, said such a law should have more than enough safeguards to protect the basic human rights of the citizenry.
"The law (Human Security Act) is in no sense an excuse for anyone to simply go out and shoot people," he said, adding, "It is also in no sense an excuse for anyone to be arrested without due process."
The imminent threat of terrorism at the home front is each country's priority these days. The world was back on its toes when the US State Department reported that the al-Qaeda terror group has regained its strength; just as strong as it was when it launched an attack against the world's sole superpower, the US.
