We remain with the chain of command: Army
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) 3rd Infantry Division under Major General Aphonsus Crucero assured the citizenry Friday that they remain with the chain of command and fully supports the Arroyo administration.

Major Lyndon Sollesta, 3ID spokesperson, said their men have remained calm and on alert and that no unusual movement among their rank and file has taken place.

"Emergency Rule". Post your comments on the declaration of a State of National Emergency here.

As far as the military participation is concerned, Sollesta said, they would not lower their guards.

The AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) is on red alert status starting last Thursday in preparation of the 20th anniversary of the People Power or Edsa 1.

"We are tracking down our men by calling their commanders to see to it that they remain loyal to our country because as long as their commanders stay calm, their men will follow them. Soldiers are reminded of their sacred oath of safeguarding the republic, and to fight all forces, be foreign or domestic that tend to destroy our freedom and democracy," Sollesta said.

On the other hand, City Police Director Norlito Bautista said no untoward incident happened Friday when more or less 500 militants and other rallyists gathered at the Provincial Capitol Ground.

The Iloilo City Police Office continues to observe the "no-permit no-rally" policy and as a result, the rallyists were not allowed to march on the streets in order to avoid any inconvenience to the public.

"We observed maximum tolerance and we deployed maximum men to watch over the rallyists and maintain peace and order situation in the city," Bautista said.

"So far the rally was peaceful and we appeal to our brothers and sisters to remain calm and avoid creating trouble and to respect each and everyone's right," Bautista added.

The city police also deployed personnel in some vital installations to avoid being sabotaged.

Meanwhile, the AFP revealed Friday that it was able to preempt a plan of some "misguided" soldiers to stage a coup against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (RPS/Sunnex)
