REPRESENTATIVE (2nd district) George Arnaiz has allotted P2 million for 198 students from Pamplona town to study agriculture at the government's Negros Oriental State University (Norsu)-Pamplona Campus for school year 2008-2009.
IN AN effort to contribute to agricultural development in the countryside,
Arnaiz's move is in response to the invitation of Norsu president Dr. Henry A. Sojor to sponsor new high school graduates from Pamplona where an agricultural campus of the state university is located.
It is only this school year that Norsu-Pamplona is open as an academic agricultural campus.
The school had been the site for agricultural research and training center, and as demonstration farm of the College of Agriculture.
The 198 scholars availed of the grant for two years. They are enrolled in a two-year academic program in Associate in Agricultural Science.
The program leads to the four-year course of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.
Norsu Main Campus-2 College of Agriculture dean Dr. Nanci Olasiman, together with Dr. Merliza Pangilinan, Alan Faburada, and two part-time instructors Joseph Nahiyal and Nanette Lagradilla compose the faculty force of Pamplona campus.
Faburada, who is also the farm manager, said the campus has wide hectares of organically grown sweet corn, watermelon, and vegetables such as cabbage, eggplant, green pepper, and ampalaya.
The farm has also a vast mango plantation.
He added that the farm had already been harvesting most of these products and serves as one of the major sources of income generating projects of the state university.
In August last year, Pamplona Campus was the site of the "Norsu Grand Harvest Festival." It was attended by representatives of agricultural regional agencies in the Visayas. (EBS)
