Friday, July 13, 2007 Oro bracing for fiesta chess tilt
NATIONAL arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon, who is also the local coordinator of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, made an assurance that the forthcoming Cagayan de Oro City fiesta celebration will not pass by without a chess tournament.
In fact, Cuizon told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro Thursday that he already requested from the city sports budget a reservation of some P6,400 cash for the conduct of a so-called Fiesta Youth chess tournament.
"I will try my best nga maka-come up ta og regular chess tournament kada piyesta. If madugangan ang funds, ato ning i-open ang tournament so that we could invite players from other places," Cuizon said.
In a related development, Cuizon also announced the city's participation in the revival of the Mindanao Games to be called this time around as Mindanao Olympics.
The football event of the Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) Mindanao Division Qualifying Games will reportedly be hosted by Misamis Oriental from August 13 to 19.
Chess competition, Cuizon said, will be slated in Socsargen area starting on the last week of July.
Chess players being eyed to represent Cagayan de Oro in the different age categories include National Master Levi Mercado, Woman National Master Cecile Gaburno Cuizon, Palaro campaigners Lennon Hart Salgados and Alyssa Ysaiah Jamaca of Corpus Christi and Jan Vincent Cayaba and Abegail Aquino of Xavier University.
