Pahanocoy, Tangub cagers edge Monico Cup foes

PAHANOCOY further strengthened its grip of top position in Group C of the ongoing 2008 Monico Cup Under-19 Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament when it edged Barangay 18, 75-72, Tuesday in a tightly fought match-up at Purok Langis, Barangay Banago.

Coach Arnel Lacson's charges were led by Froilan Bernaldez with 21, Nicholas Baylon with 17 and 9 from Jason Makilan, while Barangay 18, mentored by Sherwin Neri, was led by Mark Cordova with 22, Paul Hechanova with 18, Gregorio Lima with 13 and Ricardo Villanueva with 11 points.

In other matches, Barangay Tangub, mentored by former West Negros College Mustang Ronald Arabia, routed hapless Barangay 36, 70-46, with Mark Mancera posting a team-high 17 points for the win.

Winless Barangay 36 was led by JR Dinlasan with 22.

Meanwhile, former finalist Barangay 7 got nipped by Barangay 41, 75-74, while reigning titlist Bata went down to Barangay 19, 54-63.

Ron John Gebola led Barangay 19 with 20 points while Carl Edemne had 12 and Eric Cataluna added 8 points.

Bata got double-digit scoring fgrom Diosdado Jalandoni with 14 and Rubin Dairo with 13.

Hostilities resume Thursday at the Barangay Felisa Gym with a five-game schedule to kick off with Villamonte vs Barangay 18 at 1 p.m.; Punta Taytay vs Singcang-Airport at 2:30 p.m.; Barangay 33 vs Barangay 8 at 4 p.m.; Barangay 12 vs Handumanan at 5:30 p.m.; and Barangay 10 vs Barangay 30 at 7 p.m.

The event is a grassroots sports outreach program of Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella's congressional district office with the tournament committee headed by Monico 'Nicky' Puentevella Jr.
