| Leyte Mudslide message board
On February 17, 2006 a farming village is gone, swallowed whole by a wall of mud and boulders that swept down at a terrifying speed from a mountainside in the eastern Philippines. Officials feared the death toll could climb past 1,000.
"There are no signs of life, no rooftops, no nothing," Southern Leyte province Governor Rosette Lerias said.
The village of Guinsaugon, once a community of 2,500 people, now looks like a 40-hectare (100-acre) patch of newly plowed land.
Its 375 homes and elementary school were buried under mud up to 10 meters (30 feet) deep. Only a few small piles of debris hint at the devastation.

Been reading lately the Samar News when I stumbled on to the article written By Pinoy Gonzales; Guinsaugon Survivors Ask for Help, dated March 17. There revealed the situation of the few survivors:
1).they had a piece of plywood to sleep on that serves for mats.
2).They been eating noodles and canned sardines; apparently they saw canned corned beefs and meat-loafs but these goods never been given to them but had mysteriously disappeared.
3). No visible project of the supposed 4x5 meter houses the authorities are talking about to be given to the survivors.
Our questions here now; WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MONEY REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN SEND TO HELP THE PEOPLE?
To think that this people had nothing, really nothing! They lost their love ones, their homes, their lands, and now they lost their rights and dignities because even the goods intended for them were stolen by some unscrupulous people of authority taking advantage of their misery! Please! Please!, People of Leyte! Be aware of this! Is there anyone their who is courageous enough to confront Gov. Lerias and the town mayor concerning this matter? And for those who channeled their money to a relief-organization working for Guinsaugon Disaster, could you launch an inquiry there? There is injustices going on here! This is another killing!

This story breaks my heart. I wish there was something more I could do. I have been writing to Ms Arroyo personally for years about various issues, but the corruption that is evident here is shocking at every level. It is such a shame that such a terrible thing should happen to such beautiful people in a beautiful country. |

i would like to ask Governor Lerias and her staff at the provincial government to make an ACCOUNTING of all the donations received for THE PEOPLE OF GUINSAUGON, SAINT BERNARD, SOUTHERN LEYTE AND THE SOUTHERN LEYTE....
From a very reliable source, the municipality of Saint Bernard received only 4 million pesos as of March 29, 2006. Where are the rest of the financial help extended for THE VICTIMS OF THE TRAGEDY?
PLEASE PUBLISH the report on the all newspapers, national and local for the sake of the people who wanted to know.... |

It is sad to know that most of the people here don't trust our politicians anymore. Anybody can answer me.
The Japanese Government donated P27,000,000.00. But until now I heard that the victims has no place to stay.
Where is that money. The Press should do something to know where the money goes. |

Sir,

I am really shocked and dismayed from the posting of our countrymen who are witnessing the outright plundering of the relief goods by the local officials, mainly the politicians.
Just wondering if the recovery operations has been suspended in trying to locate the still buried school and the more than 900 victims still unaccounted for.
I have with me a metal detector equipment that can penetrate down to 25ft below the ground surface. If I could be of any help, kindly contact me via my email, or may reach me via my cellphone (619) 772-2059, or may contact the Sister's Convent in San Jose, California at (408) 729-7200. I could be in the Philippines right after the Holy Week. Thank you. |

Attention all agency of the government from National level, regional at sa provincial government, who recieve the money from the different country's assistance, please give it directly to the victims thru the master list.
