Manila cops cancel Christmas party to cut costs

NO PARTIES for the policemen of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), just a "simple but meaningful" celebration of Christmas.

Thus said NCRPO Chief Avelino Razon Jr. Friday, who also directed all police units in Metro Manila to call off planned Christmas parties and just settle for "simple but meaningful" gatherings.

"I strongly recommend that the policemen just attend mass, particularly the traditional Simbang Gabi (Dawn Mass). Or better, if they do some charitable acts to keep up with the spirit of the season," he said.

Razon joined President Arroyo and PNP Chief Edgar Aglipay in their appeal for the nation to be prudent and sensible in their ways of celebration Christmas.

He added that there are good reasons why the people should do away with lavish parties especially after the deadly floods and landslides that hit eastern Luzon.

As for the policemen, the NCRPO chief said they should be reminded of the PNP's prohibition against solicitation of gifts.

He also discouraged private individuals and other various entities from selling raffle tickets and soliciting contributions or donations from police offices as they are not provided for by their operational budgets.

"As we will turn down solicitations, we should also refrain from soliciting. It would be better if these private entities would just donate, whatever they have in excess, to the people who really need it most," Razon said. (JFF)
