San Felipe wins Giant Lantern Festival 2004
By Chris Navarro

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Barangay San Felipe again dominated this year's "Ligligan Parul" at the SM City Ampitheater Saturday night, emerging as a grandslam winner for bagging the grand prize for three consecutive years now.

San Felipe bested eight other barangays as it took home two trophies - a wooden one for bagging the first prize, and a gold-plated one for winning three consecutive times.

Thousands of spectators were dazzled by the participating lantern's colorful lights, heart pounding music and fireworks display.

San Felipe Barangay Chairman Buboy Carreon was more than elated as he received the two trophies from Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez, Vice Mayor Edwin Santiago, city councilors and executive committee chairman Frank de Jesus.

Winning second place is Barangay Sto. Rosario, followed by third placer Barangay San Jose. .

Others entries of the festival, which revolved around the theme "Parul Fernandino, Aslag ning Progreso" (Fernandino Lantern: Beacon of Progress) were Barangays San Juan, Dolores, Sta. Lucia, Sto. Niño, San Nicolas and Del Pilar.

Rodriguez said despite the budgetary constraints of the City Government, he could not let this tradition just fade away.

"Lanters are not only part of this city's history but are part of the lives of each and every Fernandino," he said.

Each giant lantern entry, it was learned, cost around P150,000 to P400,000.

This year's executive committee for the Giant Lantern Festival include Agnes Romero, co-chairperson; Chona Pamintuan, secretary; Alfrito "Bong" Mah, treasurer; Rowena Reyes and Bon David, auditors; and immediate past chairman Ivan Anthony Henares.
