Balas 1 cagers capture Unity Cup crown

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Unleashing much of their firepower, combined with speed and a strong defense, the Biyaya A Luluguran at Sisikapan (Balas) 1 cagers blasted the equally strong Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council five to capture the basketball championship of the Gov. Eddie Panlilio Unity Cup, 75-55, at the People's Gym here.

It was sweet revenge for the Balas 1 cagers who vowed to the PDCC Rescue Men in their semifinal outing, losing by a slim margin of seven points.

But the Quarrymen simply proved to be tough for the PDCC 5, as they barreled their way into the second half after trailing by as much as 8 points in the first half.

Led by tourney MVP Warren Mamangun, the Quarrymen overpowered the Rescue Men in the third quarter, finishing off their opponents who evidently lost steam, with 20 points, never looking back and giving them the chance to wrestle the lead back.

In badminton, Eddie Miranda of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist/Veterinarian (OPA-VET) took the title in the men's singles while Diana Lopez of the Governor's Office dominated the women's singles.

In the doubles match, Ariel Pascual and Eddie Miranda took the men's title while AJ Galanga and Diana Lopez captured the women's crown.

Named most disciplined team in the tournament was OPA-VET and named to the provincial Mythical Five were Jeffrey Dungca of the Provincial Cooperative Enterprise Development Office; Ernie Calma of the General Services Office; Jun Ibay of Balas 1; Marlon Vitug of PDCC; and Balas 1's Mamamgun.
