Orange, Blue lead Sun.Star sportsfest ’09

THE race for the overall title in the 2009 Sun.Star Cebu Sportsfest is now between the Orange and Blue teams after the opening day at the Aznar Coliseum.

The Orange squad bagged the title in volleyball, while Blue won the badminton and table tennis titles.

Bowling, which will be held on July 4 at the City Sports Center, will be the deciding event in the annual sports festival for the 216 men and women of Sun.Star Cebu.

Yesterday, Orange took the volleyball title after a thrilling five-set win.

The Orange team won the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-13, before Red came back roaring to win the next two sets, 25-9 and 26-24.

The Red team had an 8-5 lead in the deciding set before Orange came back to take the title.

Meanwhile, Blue defeated the Green team in the finals of badminton and table tennis.

Blue cruised to the badminton finals after the men’s doubles tandem of Jun Migallen and Rommel Manlosa and women’s pair of Cheramie Lavarez and Leah Ybañez won the elimination round over Red Team.

Green made it to the finals after Isolde Amante and Allan Defensor won the deciding mixed-doubles match against Orange to break a 1-1 tie.

In the finals, Blue won the men’s doubles, while Green evened the count by taking the women’s doubles in three sets, 21-19, 21-12, 21-12.

Blue took the title with a 21-19, 21-9, in mixed doubles.

Blue also defeated Green for the table tennis title. (RCM)
