Golden Stags clinch NCAA title

THE San Sebastian College–Recoletos (SSC-R) Golden Stags have put an end to their seven-year title drought after sweeping the Finals round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Saturday.

The Stags defeated the three-time defending champions San Beda College (SBC) Red Lions in Game Two with a 15-point lead, 76-61.

Gilbert Bulawan took the first basket in the opening quarter for the Stags but San Beda quickly bounced back with a triple from Cebuano JR Tecson.

Jake Pascual's two-pointers and Sudan Daniel's defensive stops took the Red Lions' lead to five when Q1 ended at 19-14.

Pamboy Raymundo drove all the way for a two-point bucket trimming the lead to one point in the second quarter.

But 6-foot-2 Garvo Lanete replies with a pair of twos and a shot from the outside to spike up San Beda's score to 28. Teammate point guard Anjo Caram contributed four points to finish first half at 38-28.

Golden Stags team captain Jimbo Aquino made his first field goal in the third quarter followed by Raymundo's three-pointer.

Kapampangan Ronald Pascual put an easy two-point bucket in the score board to take the lead from the Red Lions by one point.

But the Red Lions prevailed with the advantage as Q3 ended 56-54 in their favor.

Aquino fired a two and a three-pointer in the final quarter to regain the lead for the Stags.

Fourth quarter action intensified as Aquino suffered from an ankle injury and San Beda's Borgie Hermida had a cut on his left eye.

San Sebastian assured their win in the final minutes of the game as Kapampangan Calvin Abueva brought down the offense of the Red Lions.

It was a sweet victory for champion coach Ato Agustin saying: "Masarap na masarap itong championship na ito. Masasabing rookie ako pero sa experience ko sa paglalaro, na-apply ko sa kanila yung nalalaman ko (To win this championship feels so great. Others might say that I am rookie (coach) but I have applied to them (Stags) what I know through my playing experience)."

The Stags also took Game One victory after a double overtime match that ended 72-68. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
