Tonton confirms mayoralty bid

LAWYER Loreto "Tonton" Acharon revealed last week that he is definitely running for mayor against Representative Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio in 2010.

Tonton is the younger brother of Mayor Pedro "Jun" Acharon Jr. who himself is eyeing the congressional seat Antonino-Custodio is vacating.

The younger Acharon will reportedly run under the People's Champ Movement (PCM), the political party of former Antonino-Custodio rival Manny Pacquiao.

Mayor Acharon and Antonino-Custodio are party-mates in the Achievement with Integrity Movement (AIM).

Pacquiao lost to Custodio in a lopsided contest for the congressional seat in 2007.

Pacquiao is reportedly running again for Congress but in the lone district of Sarangani this time.

Tonton said while his nomination as standard bearer of PCM in General santos City will still be decided in a convention, he is confident of being chosen as PCM’s mayoralty bet.

He said he will abide by party decision if PCM will field a bet against his brother in the congressional race.

The city mayor cannot be reached for immediate comments as he was in a meeting.

Early this year, the city mayor said any political differences with his younger brother will be resolved by the family.

"At the end of the day, mag-istorya lang gihapon ang pamilya (the family will resolve the matter)," he told Sun.Star.

The Acharons have been a fixture in the city's local politics. Their father Pedro Sr. was mayor of then Buayan town from 1953-1956 and 1959-1962.

Buayan was the former name of General Santos before it became a city in 1967.

Antonio, the late elder half-brother of the city mayor and Tonton, also served as mayor of the city from 1965 until he was replaced in 1987 by Dominador Lagare as a result of the Edsa revolt.

Mayor Acharon is on his third and last term as mayor.

He also served as city councilor and became the vice mayor in 1998 until he replaced Mayor Adelbert Antonino, who resigned in February 2001.

He was elected mayor in the May 2001 election by defeating former city mayor Rosalita Nuñez. (EGE)

The sure ticket to win in an

The sure ticket to win in an election is having a fortified and well-oiled machinery. If you do not have this better stay away from politics. You are wasting your hard-earned money and your time, as well. Only the Antoninos have this kind of advantage in our place's election. If you dream of toppling them in an election, you better plant your election machinery as early as you can. Time and again, only those who really work hard to secure their political clout will win in an election.

Darlene has not done

Darlene has not done anything for GenSan except sweep the market sidewalk every election time. She does not deserve to be mayor of GenSan.

Political dynasty???? Bakit

Political dynasty???? Walang ring kwentang tao yon. Pati ang taga LTO na si Benzonan...

Sa tagal kong pagsubaybay sa

Sa tagal kong pagsubaybay sa politika ng gensan...I say Mayor Rosalita T. Nuñez is the best mayor that GenSan ever had.

Leadership, political will, heart for the poor, genuine service to the people, and unparalleled intelligence!!!

Mayor Nuñez is the principle architect of boomtown GenSan!! Kung wala si Mayor Nuñez, walang boomtown GenSan!!

Antoninos and Acharons and their allies are nothing compared to Nunez!!

Mag research ka bro!! Para di ka magmukhang ignorante!!! Pag-aralan mo sinasabi mo. Pure fact not political propaganda paniwalaan mo.

Comments are very much appreciated.

Salamat.

hahay...the people of gensan

hahay...the people of gensan are being taken for a ride. it's a political "drama" to ensure custodio wins.

remember, acharon is under the wings of the antoninos, therefore, in the end, antonino wins!

i just hope that this political dynasty will soon end.

korek!

korek!

The people of GenSan are all

The people of GenSan are all settlers. Some are pioneers like the Acharons, Catolicos, Vencers, Larabasters, and some latecomers like the Antoninos. The only native of Buayan I knew was Datu Buday and his tribe. So you cannot bar Darlene from running for mayor just because she is a new settler to Gensan.

In the 1970s, the Chiongbians feuded with the Acharons for political control of the city. Although the Chiongbians have a shipping business, the Acharons were the pioneers in Silway.

First it was only Cotabato, then the south was created. Now you have Sarangani. Progress, population will dictate the politics of the region. Sad but true, candidates need millions to run for office. But if the youth can mobilize and field their own candidates that would be a first for RP.
