Acharon opens veggie gab

THE 7th National Vegetable Congress held on July 14-16 in General Santos City was a success, having been participated by at least 700 participants from different regions nationwide.

Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr., of General Santos City, was grateful the city had been chosen to host the event, saying such can further boost relationship between the government and industry stakeholders.

"This is an event, which our farmers can get additional knowledge about vegetable farming. Most vegetables are grown in Sarangani Province, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, and General Santos serves as the market for products from these areas. Hosting such event is a reminder that we commit to the vision of the city to join in a worthy crusade," he said.

He also greeted participants with the usual greeting that Generals used to say to visitors, which is "Magandang Gensan." He shared the city's history and encouraged participants to discover the city more, which is also the hometown of People's Champ Manny Pacquiao.

Among the aims of the 7th National Vegetable Congress are to equip the vegetable growers with the latest technology update for tropical vegetable production, packaging and handling techniques; to develop industry partnership on modern technology; and to strengthen the existing Seed Industry Program of the government.

With its theme "Accelerating the Development of the Philippine Vegetable Industry in Response to National and Global Challenges," the congress is organized by the Central Mindanao Vegetable Industry Development Council
(Cemvidec) Inc.

Sarangani Governor Miguel Dominguez, for his part, said the only key to boost vegetable industry in the country is through technology.

"I think we (farmers) have to do a better job (than crafting resolutions). Our job in the government is very simple, we just provide necessary regulatory functions, we provide infrastructure. It's about time to start creating a strong foundation and network. We must also learn from technology because it is the only answer to have better production," Dominguez said.
