Emergency Rule message board

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a National State of Emergency on February 24, 2006 as she tried to cope with a reported coup plot and a possible repeat of the "people power" revolts that ousted two of her predecessors.

She said her administration had quashed a coup plot but that the country still faced "a clear threat" from "treasonous forces."

On February 25 police raided the offices of a newspaper critical of Arroyo, and detained an opposition lawmaker and two retired police generals who were at a golf course at the time they were taken in for questioning.

Several hundred government opponents gathered at a Roman Catholic Mass, where they questioned the legal legitimacy of the state of emergency.

The Sun.Star website has devoted a whole section to hear your opinions on the declaration.
