Emergency Rule message board

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a National State of Emergency on February 24, 2006 as she tried to cope with a reported coup plot and a possible repeat of the "people power" revolts that ousted two of her predecessors.

She said her administration had quashed a coup plot but that the country still faced "a clear threat" from "treasonous forces."

On February 25 police raided the offices of a newspaper critical of Arroyo, and detained an opposition lawmaker and two retired police generals who were at a golf course at the time they were taken in for questioning.

Several hundred government opponents gathered at a Roman Catholic Mass, where they questioned the legal legitimacy of the state of emergency.

The Sun.Star website has devoted a whole section to hear your opinions on the declaration.

" Bert Ylanan " < > The Philippines need a Hugo Chavez!

" George Madlos " < > There will never be true change in the philippines unless we have a civil war. I know it sounds radical, but that is the only way we can rid our country of traditional politicians who plunder the goverment coffers year after year.We need fresh blood.

" cryuz " < avalon > What is happening in country today is not the presidents fault nor the government. besides we are the government, the people is the government whatever happen to the saying "its not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". Do you think that if Arroyo will step down our country will change for the better? I think not, Change the president but not our habits is not the solution. The solution is that we should start changing ourselves and help each other. e.g. as a government employee we should not take long breaks or we should attend to the peoples needs quick. The difference with us filipinos is that we envy each other and we crave for power para "sikat" that does not help. what helps is we filipinos must discipline ourselves and follow rules and procedures strictly. Most of all we should not take advantage of our poor citizens instead we should educate them that 500 pesos for one day rally does not solve problems but instead it will create another problem. The church should not enter into politics even advises from the church should not be allowed because Jesus once said what is for ceasar is for ceasar and what is for God the father is for Him. I am a catholic but I codemn the church for entering into the scene of politics. The politicians should stop thinking of "whats in it for me" principle instead they should think of whats "in it for the people" besides politicians will become public servants they should serve the public not the other way around. "Serve the Servants?". Lastly, change in presidency will not affect each individuals life, what i mean to say is if we are lazy and always thinking of what the government could do for us or always asking for the governments help regarding housing and financing without working our lives will not be better, we should work not ask. we should learn how to fish. get it.

" mcl " < none > I'd like to share to you my emotion how I feel with this government.

I am a government employee for almost 15 years now. I dont think and I dont care whether I can be charged of this but I just letting my emotion go with the kind of government that we had. It seems our economy is not getting any better and I dont convinced about GMAs clamour that she has done the right thing to improve our economy. In what way? Was our country really taking an economic take off? Look at our surroundings? The people in particular, I, you and almost everybody is getting crazy nowadays. GMA must do something by heart. Much so that political crisis is getting worse, this nation will continue to divide. She knows the cause of the turmoil and she should start realizing the faults she made from the start and accept where she fails. Filipinos are already tired. Election is already over. People are already very very tired. It is the time to heed our calls and exercise a true mandate to make this country a better country to live.

" soaring-spirit " < > Survival of one person? I doubt it! Arroyo survives because of some reasons; she still has her avid supporters, also clinging to their survival. One example is the military support: she is giving bonuses and housing units: that is her strategy for survival. Sadly, it is the money supposed to be helping the poor. For the poor? We might as well be asking the heaven for a miracle, who knows??

" Toney " < > It's no longer the self- preservation of one person, but the survival of the country as a whole. We are all aboard a sinking ship, what happen to one happen to all. The need of the many outweigh the need of the few or one. Somebody must be responsible, accountable and must answer to why we are where we are. Instead of blindly supporting the wrong person, ask why this person is doing to your beloved country. Is the person doing more harm than good?

" soaring-spirit " < > We, Filipinos, oftentimes see the government as the root of all our problems. It is true that good government produces good society, and vice versa. But, if we take a deeper look into it, we cannot deny that citizens involvement are essential for the growth of the country. Education is a vital element to progress. Yes, the Philippines has one of the highest literacy rate in Asia, but it is not enough. Education does not start by just reading nor writing, it is by comprehension that makes the education effective. Take one example of "birth control" program. It is surprising that some women still believed that the pills could make them sterile, that the pills contribute to ovarian cancer, that there is a high risk of a birth defects, etc., etc.! Fallacies or misleading notions overpower facts in this case because, these was not properly accompanied by adequate education concerning the matter. That is true that the Roman Catholic church prohibits the practice of birth control. But is it a strong reason not to think further that by having a lot of children would results to hardships for the parents since, they cannot properly feed their children anymore. The question here, did we ever ask the good question finally? WHAT IS MORE SINFUL: Birth-control or starving kids because you cannot feed them. For me it is not a sin, IT IS A CRIME!

" Jerome Dabao " < jdabao@comcas.net > The raising of emergency power was neccessary and justified. If the opposition thinks otherwise, they can file their case to the court and be heard accordingly but to continue to create trouble along with coniving with the communist groups is by no means should be tolerated. All this military men who were planning for a coup are just another "Gringo Honasan" wannabe that when said and done wants power for themselves and not for the country and I can say the same thing for those trying to unseat the president.

" sibuboy " < > i'm not pro GMA. But i'm really disgusted of how these opposition leaders and militant groups are doing to our country. maybe they forgot that their actions doesn't help instead it worsens the economic status of our country.
We all know that they are just using the poor, the militant groups for their favors. also these party list are not helping at all. instead of being appointed to the congress, now should be their opportunity to show to the people on how a politician must serve the government instead, they are using it for their political agenda. the worst is they are using people's money now for their ideological ambitions which is already far from reality.

" robuy " < robuy381@yahoo.com > I have much respect for both sides of the coins - administration and opposition. Democracy will work if both will work together in times of emergency. Really, Feb. 24, 2006 showed an imminent danger of the state, in fact a plan was discovered by intellegence agencies to takeover our legitimate government. I believe the President has the blanket authority to proclaim 1017 during any emergency to preserve peace and protect of its nation from chaos and war. I salute you madame president - keep up the good work. You are still with the people and you became a president because 'I firmly believe you won the election' The people had spoken and people are bored with movie actors becoming a president. God bless you Madame President!!!
