FILIPINO World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao scored a unanimous-decision triumph over Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico on Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Pacquiao, who improved his record to 44 wins, three losses and two draws, opened the fight very aggressively and continued to outwork Barrera throughout the 12-round fisticuff.

Barrera barely took the fifth round, but it was the best he could muster as the “Pacman ” kept his domination of the match.

The Mexican “Baby-faced Assasin” sustained a nasty cut under his right eye and was later deducted a point when he unleashed a wayward punch after a break in the 11th round.

There was no knockdown in any of the rounds, though Pacquiao sent Barrera staggering to the ropes with a solid left to the face in the penultimate canto.

The judges scored the fight 118-109, 118-109, and 115-112, all in favor of Pacquiao. The loss dropped Barrera’s win-loss card to 63-5. It was also the Mexican’s second defeat to Pacquiao, who stopped Barrera four years ago.

When asked if that was the end of his boxing career, Barrera said he was finished but he was happy for Pacquiao.

“I feel bad, but no problem, this is sports.” Barrera said.

The “Pacman” is set to fly back to the Philippines and celebrate his title-retention victory with his countrymen.

Earlier in the undercard, Filipino featherweight Michael Farenas tallied a second-round knockout over Arturo Valenzuela of Mexico. It was Farenas 18th win against two losses and two draws, while it dropped the Mexican to a 19-9-1 win-loss-draw record.

The victory came after Farenas landed a solid left to the face of Valenzuela, who was evidently groggied by the blow. The young Farenas hails from the province of Sorsogon, Philippines.

In another undercard, Steven Luevano defeated Antonio “T-Rex” Davis to keep his WBO featherweight belt. Luevano downed Davis at the close of the 11th round on his way to a 119-108, 119-108, 118-109 victory. (Sunnex)
