Rituals set for missing Tublay folk

TUBLAY, Benguet -- The family of Ulyesses Tabao-ek want him to rest in peace.

A ritual is to be performed in the memory of 25-year-old Tabao-ek if his body is not located soon.

Tabao-ek died while trying to help in rescue operations in Barangay Sto. Niño at the height of Typhoon Pepeng.

There are 12 people still missing in the province since the typhoon hit, Tabao-ek is the last Tublay folk still missing.

Rodolfo Cosente said Cordilleran rituals would be made soon at Barangay Coroz as the area in Sto. Nino is unsafe. A temporary house is being set up for the immediate family of Tabao-ek in preparation for the native ritual.

The cultural practice of rituals will be coordinated with barangay Officials, either the daw-es or the pacde will be performed.

Cosente stands as vice president for townsfolk of evacuees in the area, neighbors, relatives and friends from the sitio created an informal group.

The group plans to coordinate de-briefings. "We want to have separate programs for adults and children," Cosente said.

The group is targeting to invite psychologists for assessment as well as play therapy for children.

Starting from a "Bayanihan" system to taking care of their respective neighbors, the group of neighbors proceeded to help each other on tasks like rescuing, getting relief goods, and going back to the sitio to secure salvageable goods. Patrolling the area was done by their own initiative.
